Nicotine Strength Guide: How to Choose the Right mg

Nicotine strength is usually the single most confusing spec for new vapers — and picking wrong is the most common reason people either don’t feel satisfied or find their first device way too harsh. Here’s how to actually choose.

Salt Nicotine vs Freebase

Salt nicotine (nic salts) is smoother at higher strengths, which is why most disposables and many pod-system e-liquids use it — it lets manufacturers offer 20mg–50mg strengths without the harsh throat hit freebase gives at those levels. Freebase nicotine is the traditional e-liquid style, typically 3mg–12mg (sometimes up to 18mg), with a stronger throat hit at the same mg strength.

Rule of thumb: if you’re vaping a disposable or a pod system with high mg options (20mg+), you’re almost certainly using salt nicotine already.

How to Pick Your Strength

Your smoking historySuggested starting strength
Heavy smoker (a pack a day or more)35–50mg salt nic
Moderate smoker (10–20 cigarettes/day)20–35mg salt nic
Light/social smoker12–20mg salt nic, or 6–12mg freebase
Never smoked, trying recreationallyStart low — 3–6mg freebase, or 0mg
Reducing nicotine over timeStep down gradually in freebase (12mg u2192 6mg u2192 3mg)

These are starting points, not rules — everyone’s tolerance is different, and it’s normal to adjust after your first few days.

Signs You’ve Picked the Wrong Strength

Too high: harsh throat hit, coughing, or feeling lightheaded. Too low: still craving cigarettes shortly after vaping, or vaping much more frequently to compensate. If either sounds familiar, switch strength rather than push through.

A Note on UAE Products Specifically

UAE-legal e-liquids and disposables must meet MoIAT/ECAS certification standards, which includes accurate nicotine-strength labeling — see our UAE Vaping Laws guide. Always buy from a licensed retailer whose stock is certified; non-certified products’ actual nicotine content can differ from the label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between mg and % on e-liquid labels? They describe the same thing in different units — 20mg is the same as 2%, and 50mg is the same as 5%.

Can I mix e-liquids of different strengths? Yes, mixing is generally fine and a common way to fine-tune your dose, as long as they’re compatible with your device.

Is 50mg too strong for a first-time vaper? For most people who’ve never smoked or smoked lightly, yes — 50mg salt nic is generally recommended for heavy, established smokers only.
